Inside, the pavilions function much like comfortable private hotel rooms, complete with ensuites and balconies; the canvas walls and zip panels retain the glamping feel. You’re far enough away from neighbours to feel like you have the place to yourself. For travellers driving north or south, it can also work as a softer landing than going straight into Brisbane. Arrive, taste, eat, sleep, then tackle city traffic the next morning. When I was there, at 8.30 in the morning on a very chilly July day, the ‘hot foods’ takeaway bay with its toasted sandwiches and bacon-and-egg-rolls, among other things, was doing quick business. The bakery is a local institution rather than a minimalist pastry temple. The lake, the bridge and the Yarrawonga-Mulwala twin-town set-up make this feel like a proper border-country pause rather than a dash in and out. It works well as part of a Murray loop involving Yarrawonga, Rutherglen, Corowa, Cobram and Albury. The menu changes with the seasons, which is a good reason not to be too prescriptive about what to order. My approach would be to choose whatever is making the best use of local produce that day, rather than defaulting automatically to the quickest thing.
